Pitfalls, Poisons, and Prevention

Preventable issues in the German Shepherd Dog.

Some breeds, like the German Shepherds, have a genetic predisposition to drug toxicity. Veterinarians will typically treat common issues in puppies like diarrhea caused by parasites with metronidazole or ivermectin. Though liver toxicity in dogs can occur at any age, young dogs are more susceptible to adverse drug reactions and liver damage due to their immature liver metabolism functionality and excretory functions. A test developed in 2001 is available to determine if your dog is at risk is called the Multi-Drug Sensitivity (MDR-1) genotype. however we still suggest erring on the side of caution by avoiding any of these drugs and substances altogether.
